An approach to sustainable development based on vernacular principles
Abstract
Heritage is an essential component of sustainable development in every society. Oman is known for its rich culture and vernacular technologies, and the locals have in the past developed various practical strategies considering several aspects to improve human comfort. The surrounding context, available resources, climate conditions, and cultural beliefs had quite the impact on the vernacular Omani settlements, and the locals had to develop their own sustainable techniques that would adapt to the existing situation and accommodate their needs with the lack of modern technologies that we have today. This research aims to comprehend and investigate the simplicity of vernacular architecture and the influence it has on the development of sustainable cities, explore the potential regeneration of neglected old buildings in Oman, and provide solutions and recommendations for future sustainable developments in reference to the effective existing traditional settlements that can be learned from.
