Overview

The Master of Science in Computer Science, is a 2-year programme, provides you a comprehensive curriculum consisting of academic and applied knowledge of CS and IT technology management and emerging technologies in large data processing and analysis.

You will have the flexibility to specialise in ‘Data Science’ or ‘Technology Management’, while gaining a broad basis in Computer Science with a concrete foundation in the innovation, application and management of computer science applications across a range of disciplines. You will receive international teaching with faculty members from GUtech, RWTH Aachen University as well as several other European universities.

Subjects taught included machine learning, big data analytics, and network forensic as well as network security. By choosing a specialisation, you can prepare yourself for your favourite career path.

The MSc programme is also tailored to equip you with entrepreneurial skills matching the national priorities for a profitable and sustainable growth.

The MSc in Computer Science is a career oriented, multidisciplinary programme. It is suitable for students who are interested in the general area of designing and managing large IT infrastructure. The degree can result in interesting and wide employment opportunities which include, data centre manager, network specialist, data analyst, network security manager, etc. In addition, the graduates of the programme can enroll in innovation and consultancy companies or start their own IT company providing much needed IT services based on emerging technologies to companies and government organizations in the region.

Aside from industry, graduates may go on to pursue consultancy as well as research careers, whether through doctoral study in academia or commercial research.

The graduate attributes and skills that the graduates are expected to develop during their postgraduate studies are divided into attributes and skills that build on the core values of the University and attributes and skills that are specific to the study programme. A focus is set on developing entrepreneurial skills matching national priorities for a profitable and sustainable growth.

The generic attributes and skills that build on the core values of the University are the same for all study programmes at GUtech, namely, Ethics, Critical thinking and problem solving, Creative thinking, Communication, Life-long learning, and Sustainability.

In addition, graduates from the Master of Science in Computer Science programme will also have developed the following attributes and skills:

  1. Specialised knowledgeThe graduates can use appropriate methods and tools to construct and evaluate IT solutions for a given business problem by means of research and innovation. They can design, develop and evaluate advanced technical products and architectures of IT systems and software and generate all required technical documents.
  2. Data scienceThe graduates are familiar with networks, network management and security, and technologies for storing and analysing large data sets, which are essential for understanding cyber-physical systems and the Internet of Things.
  3. EntrepreneurshipThe graduates can formulate and evaluate IT strategic plans to achieve stated operational and strategic business goals.
  4. ManagementThe graduates can apply and assess key management methods of IT software and security infrastructure given operational and strategic business goals. They have a clear methodology for managing projects by understanding the issues of risk management, on-time project delivery, cost analysis and, fundamental for a good manager, the capabilities for understanding and managing people.
  5. InnovationThe graduates can explain the theory and science of new IT technologies and standards and develop new IT applications and processes for various business scenarios.
  6. Analytical and reflective thinkingThe graduates understand the complexity of managing large IT infrastructure. The graduates can critically assess and carefully consider the cultural, economic, sociological, and ethical impact of global IT business activities.
  7. CS ethicsThe graduates understand and apply the Code of Ethics and Professional Practice of the IT profession.

Structure

The Master of Science in Computer Science is a four (4) semester programme, capped off with a Master Thesis. In the first three (3) semesters of the programme you will be able to complete twelve (12) courses, equivalent to a total workload of 120 credit points in the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). In the last semester, you will work on the Master’s thesis.

Each semester you will be able to enroll in up to four (4) courses, which will allow you to complete twelve (12) courses in three (3) semesters, before proceeding to the Master’s thesis in the fourth semester. You may also choose to enroll in fewer than 4 courses a semester. However, this will take a bit longer to complete the programme.

All courses are offered in evenings and weekends.

You will have the opportunity to study a subject in depth from these six knowledge areas: Management, Network Security, Data Science, Emerging Technologies, Development, and Research. By selecting electives, you will specialise in either ‘Data Science’ or ‘Technology Management’.

  • The Data Science (MSc CSDS) specialisation requires you to take at least six courses from the areas of Network Security and Data Science.
  • The Technology Management (MSc CSTM) specialisation requires you to take at least six courses from the areas Management and Emerging Technologies.

To complete the programme, you will have to earn a total of 120 ECTS credit points distributed as follows:

  • 72 ECTS credit points for course work & internship,
  • 18 ECTS credit points for research and thesis preparation course
  • 30 ECTS credits for the Master’s thesis.

TIME FRAME

Students are expected to complete the programme in four semesters. Programme will be delivered  once a month (Wednesday to Saturday) in and outside GUtech Campus.

GUtech has a ‘Study Abroad’ agreement with Hasselt University in Belgium. This allows you to take one more semester abroad and earn a second MSc degree in Transportation.

Entry Requirements

Academic requirements:

The programme is for graduate students and professionals holders of a recognised bachelor degree in:

  • Information Sciences
  • Computer Science
  • Computer Engineering

It is certainly possible to apply to our programme with a bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than computer science. You must, however, possess a demonstrably strong background in computer science and a basic background in mathematics, as evidenced by a work experience in a computer science field.

Eligibility will be based on academic and work certificates as well as personal interviews.

Applicants without a Bachelor degree are required to:
  • hold a Diploma (or equivalent) of not less than 2 years of study be at least 25 years of age have a minimum of 6-years of work experience.
  • Minimum GPA: 2.5 on a scale of 4. Applicants with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.5 is admitted in exceptional cases.

 

Language requirements:

The programme is taught in English and an academic level of proficiency in this language is imperative.

Applicants must provide adequate proof of English proficiency (e.g. TOEFL 79 internet-based test, IELTS 6.0 or equivalent).

Fees & Scholarship

Application fee

A non-refundable fee OMR 100 is required prior to application being processed.

Tuition fees

Tuition fees are paid according to the number of ECTS credit points associated with the courses you enroll in.

The total credit points required to complete and obtain MSc CS degree is 120 ECTS credit points (ECTS CP).

The total tuition fees for the Master programme is OMR 13,800.

Scholarship opportunities

We offer scholarships for successful applicants to cover up to 50 percent of tuition fees. 

There is not a separate application for these scholarships. All successful applicants will be considered.

We also offer scholarships to partner companies amounting to 50 percent reduction in fees.

General Enquiries

Can I meet with the Master’s programme coordinator?

Can I visit the University campus to have a look around?

Yes, you are most welcome to visit our campus in Halban. Our campus is located in Halban, off the last Maabila exist of the Muscat Expressway.

Entry Requirements

What qualifications do I need to get entry into the programme?

A Bachelor degree in Computer Science or related field of a reputable Omani or international university.

What is the minimum cGPA requirement do you apply to the Master’s programme?

No minimum cGPA is required.

Can I still apply if I do not have a relevant degree?

Yes you can still apply, the decision about eligibility of an applicant with a university degree different from Computer Science will be based on personal interviews.

Programme Structure

What study mode does the Master’s programme offer?

The programme is structured to be delivered on a part-time basis in a block courses format, over six semesters. Each semester encompasses fifteen weeks of teaching. Classes are scheduled during weekdays, from 2pm to 7pm, and on Saturday, from 9am to 5pm. For a detailed timetable, you may send your enquiry to pg.cs@gutech.edu.om.

How many credit points are required to graduate?

To graduate, you will required to successfully earn 120 ECTS credit points.

What are the term dates for the programme?

The academic year is made up of 2 terms. The duration of each term is 15 weeks. The first term begins in late February/Early March and ends in late June. The second term runs from October to January.

Some adjustments may apply due to public or religious festivities.

Can I receive a study plan in advance so that I can plan my time accordingly?

Yes, you may receive your relevant study plan and a timetable if you send your request to pg.cs@gutech.edu.om.

What specialisations are they part of the programme?

We offer you three specialisations to choose from for your future career:

  • Computer Science
  • Data Science
  • Technology Management

When will I be required to declare my specialisation?

You will be required to declare your specialisation at the start of the term.

How do I submit an application and what documents do I need to provide?

How long does it take for admission process to be completed?

If you provide every document requested, and meet all entry requirements, decision can be taken in 3 working days.

Will the university be able to provide me with acceptance of admission paper to present to my company for funding purpose ?

Yes, offers are made in writing and we may send your offer letter to your employer if you provide us with the contact details.

Do I need to submit evidence of English language proficiency for my application?

Yes, a minimum IELTS of a band score of 6.0 or equivalent is required at the time of submitting your application. However, if you are awaiting the release of IELTS or an equivalent result, you may send an email to pg.cs@gutech.edu.om to advise you on how to proceed.

Credit Transfer

Do you accept credit transfers into the Master’s programme?

Yes, it’s acceptable

How many credits from my previous postgraduate courses can I transfer to the Master’s programme if I am accepted?

Up to 60 credit points can be transferred if the Ministry of Higher Education approves such a transfer.
